What is Plasma Spray Coating

Thermal spraying is a surface strengthening technology and an important part of surface engineering technology. It has always been a new technology project that has been promoted in my country. It uses a certain heat source (such as arc, plasma spraying or combustion flame, etc.) Powdered or filamentous metal or non-metallic materials are heated to a molten or semi-molten state, and then sprayed onto the pretreated substrate surface at a certain speed by means of flame itself or compressed air, and deposited to form a surface coating with various functions of a technology.

Plasma spraying is a relatively common form of thermal spraying. It is one of the most versatile and widely used thermal spraying processes. The principle is to use the plasma arc as the heat source to send the powder material into the plasma or plasma jet, and then heat it to a melted or partially melted state. It has the advantages of high production efficiency, good coating performance, wide range of spraying materials, low cost and high efficiency.

Compared with other thermal spraying technologies, its main feature is that the plasma arc temperature is as high as 10,000 °C, and the sprayed particles can be melted in a short time to obtain the required functional coating. Since the invention of plasma spraying technology, it has been widely used in the preparation of wear-resistant ceramic coatings on metal and non-metal surfaces because of its simple operation, high speed and high efficiency.

There are many parameters that affect the heating performance of the plasma spraying, such as the intensity of the current, the composition and flow of the discharge gas, the size and shape of the anodes, and the distance between the cathode and anode.

General plasma spraying equipment mainly includes: spray gun, powder feeder, rectifier power supply, air supply system, water cooling system and control.
